Company History

Shirley Consulting Engineers Ply Ltd was established in 1974 to provide an integrated source of professional advice in Engineering and Geology. The firm was originally known as Andrew Shirley & Associates Pty Limited, but changed its name in 1994 to Shirley Consulting Engineers Pty Limited.

The firm provides a ‘total design and construction’ service for all aspects of ground engineering work, as well as undertaking forensic studies to determine the cause of ground structure failures [and related expert witness advice] site investigations and geotechnical work. The firm has made a special study of the geological interpretation of substrata, excavation & slope engineering, and is the Licensee for the patented "Integrated Support System" for excavations. Specialised field techniques have been developed to enable rapid economic, site investigations; ‘state of the art’ computing facilities are also used to produce fully documented designs, drawings and specifications in a minimum time frame.

The firm's laboratory [Testrite Laboratories Pty Ltd] acts as a separate commercial entity with facilities at Concord.

The firm acts as consultants to various development and industrial groups, insurance companies, contractors, state and local government bodies, architectural and legal practices, as well as private individuals.

Investigation, design and construction supervision for large basement excavations in Spit Junction, Campsie (State Superannuation Board) and Newtown. Investigation and design of major hotel basement carpark (12m deep) using diaphragm walling at Double Bay.

Geological appraisal, design and construction supervision for various 2.3m dia. TBM tunnels in the Sydney & Penrith areas.

Design of HDPE membrane for the protection of groundwater and ground in new Sulphuric Acid Plant at Kalgoorlie WA [Western Mining Corporation] & membrane rehabilitation at APS Chemicals Seven Hills, NSW. Investigation & Design of slag granulation pit under existing processing plant at Mt Isa Qld [Mt Isa Mines].

Investigation of causes of instability and design of remedial works for major landslides at Coalcliff, Stanwell Park and Macksville (State Rail Authority) and Bulli Pass (Roads and Traffic Authority). Landslip hazard assessment for the Warringah. Pittwater & Gosford Council areas and preparation of 1:25,000 scale hazard maps for the entire Gosford City area.

Investigation, design and construction supervision of subdivisions, and design of stabilisation works for unstable areas in sloping potentially unstable land in the Warringah, Pittwater, Gosford and Baulkham Hills Shires. Expert advice in relation to slope stability & building guidelines for the Thredbo coronial inquiry.

Cliff Stability studies using abseiling techniques in the Sydney area, Gosford & Wyong Shires. Projects have included assessment of Coastal Bluff Stability of the Norah Head & North Entrance Area for Wyong Shire Council, The Tudibaring Headland at Copacabana for Gosford City Council and a former quarry in Arncliffe for the Rockdale City Council.

Design of reinforced soil walls and on-site stormwater detention systems.
